BUSHWICK HOUSING INDEPENDENCE PROJECT (BHIP)
Telephone: (718) 574-3007
Location: 144 Bleecker Street
Hours of Operation: Monday through Thursday 10:00 AM to 4:00PM

What we try to do is keep rent stabilized tenants from losing their apartments. Every privately owned building with 6 apartments or more is a rent statbilized building, until the building has been totally rehabilitated. Important things that you should know:

  1. If you receive a court paper, you must answer it. Bring the paper to our office and we will go to court with you. If you do not have legal papers te be in this country, it doesn't matter. You still have rights to your apartment.
  2. If the landlord offers you money to move out, don't accept it. Come to our office and we will advise you
  3. You are still entitled to have a lease for your apartment. If your landlord gives you a new lease, don't sign it. Come to our office and we will advise you whether or not to sign it.
  4. If the conditions in your apartment or in your building are bad, come to our office and we will advise you on what to do.

**There is no charge for our services! Father Powis, Sr. Kathy Maire and Kennedy Rivera are our staff.
